This weekend, I got to go out to the Big Apple to visit my best friend from high school, Victor, who is getting his undergrad at NYU.
Probably the busiest four days of my life, I got a taste of Victor’s life and saw as much of the city as possible. I, of course, had many cameras handy while we ran (literally ran, on two feet) all over Manhattan at all hours of the day and night. While the mass majority of my “artsy” shots are on rolls of 35mm film shot in my Pentax K1000 that are waiting to be developed, I thought I’d share some of my typical tourist snapshots from my iPhone and my dying Canon DSLR.
35mm shots coming soon, I promise!
Washington Square Park
The High Line- the coolest park built on an abandoned part of former elevated NYC railroad.
The 9/11 Memorial- haunting beautiful and tragically peaceful.
Chelsea Marketplace
Also used in a scene from Remember Me, one of my top 5 favorite films that I’d recommend to anyone.
My sister sent me this text while I was away. Plain White T’s got me through many a rough time in high school and I love that she was thinking of me!
Times Square!
Meet Victor- isn’t he handsome?!
Cathedral of St. John the Divine near Columbia University- The completely breathtaking largest cathedral in the world.
The three story M&M store in Times Square, where Victor and I may or may not have gotten down to the cupid shuffle with some of the employees.
Rockefeller Center
Radio City Music Hall- Did anyone else dream of dancing as a Rockette in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as a kid? Oh, then it was just me
The New York Public Library
Grand Central Station- Celebrating 100 years! It’s every bit as gorgeous and overwhelming as I’d imagined.
As a complete Gossip Girl junkie- sitting on the steps of the Met while wearing tights was a MUST. If only I’d been eating yogurt while doing it.
🙂
While at the Met fulfilling my TV obsession ridiculousness, I fueled my love for art and came across a William Eggleston exhibit and almost lost it. I was standing in the same room with 36 of my favorite photographer’s industry-changing dye-transfer color prints. When did the exhibit open? The day before I was there. It was fate.
Another part of my goofy Gossip Girl obsession- the Tisch School of the Arts. They attend Tisch in the show, as did/do countless talents in the drama business (Many of whom are some of Victor’s friends and are amazing people).
How many of y’all have seen Night at the Museum? If you haven’t, you should because it’s a great time, and was shot at the American Museum of Natural History. The sheer volume of amazing things that are kept in this museum could’ve held my attention for days, and I was sad that I could only spend a few hours marveling at it’s exhibits.
While these are only a fraction of the wonderful things that I got to do in my four short days in New York City (also including visiting MOMA, Columbia, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State building, etc. etc.), I could go back and spend months taking in everything the city has to offer! If you’ve never visited the city, make plans and go! While city life isn’t usually my style, it was a nice temporary change of pace. If you need a tour guide let me know and I’ll get you in touch with Victor! He’s an exceptional tour guide and loves meeting people.
What an adventure NYC has been. Only one question remains- where should I jet off to next?
xoxo- Jacqueline
