I don’t know if y’all know it, but just east of Bourbonnais- one of my favorite festivals just celebrated it’s 76th year in Momence.
My dad grew up in Momence and the Annual Gladiolus Festival has always been the highlight of the year. With history that includes Drum Corps, carnivals, parades, flea markets, concerts, car shows, and more- it attracts thousands of people every year to its little corner of Illinois to share its charm and warmth.
Saturday is the largest day of the festival including an antique car show, 5k and 10k runs, an enormous flea, craft, and antique market, the Grand Street Parade, beer tent, live music, and raffle drawings.
I must admit- my favorite part of the ENTIRE festival is the fresh kettle corn! (Don’t tell Grampa ;))
The entire town lines the streets in the afternoon for the Grand Parade that includes the Glad Fest Queen and Court, bands from all over the state, our very own Marching Monesse, the Momence Honor Guard, the Momence High School cheerleaders and football teams, the Jesse White Tumblers, and many MANY more.
Even though the festival was born in 1938- well before my family would be involved- the Roses have been either participants or spectators in the Glad Fest for over 30 years. All of my aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. gather together for a weekend out of our busy summers. We usually have a cookout after the parade and the weather was GORGEOUS this year!
If you’ve never made it out- put it on your schedule for next summer! I promise you won’t regret it- and if you see me around come say hey!
